Saints Split DH at Cornerstone

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Siena Heights baseball team split a double header against Cornerstone this afternoon.

THE BASICS

Final Scores: Game 1: Siena Heights 10, Cornerstone 1

Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan (Dewitt Field)

Records: Siena Heights (17-15, WHAC 7-5), Cornerstone (14-20, WHAC 7-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1:

Saints opened up with a strong pitching and hitting performance in the first game. SHU cracked the scoreboard in the 2nd inning on a Cornerstone balk that sent home a run. Then in the 3rd inning Brendan Green doubled down the left field line to score a run to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Connor McCoy and Logan Nolff picked up RBIs during their at bats.

Cornerstone was able to get their lone run off of Saints starter Reid Olmtead in the bottom of the 3rd. Then with bases loaded in the top of the 7th McCoy stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam to extend Siena's lead to 8-1. SHU tacked on two more runs in the 9th inning off a fielder's choice to secure their win.

TOP SAINTS

Game 2:

Game 2 was a pitching duel for both teams. There was no scoring till the 5th inning when Cornerstone scored two runs to go out to an early 2-0 lead. Then in the 7th, CU added two more runs. Siena's offense couldn't get going off of Cornerstone's pitcher who threw a complete game 4 hit win. The Golden Eagles got two more runs in the 8th inning to make it a 6-0 game. SHU couldn't come back and was shut out for the first time all season.
