BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Siena Heights baseball team dropped two contests against Saint Xavier (Ill.) 10-1 and 7-6, on Sunday, as they returned to regular season action.
In game one, the Cougars opening the scoring early in the first inning, with the first batter coming home. SHU fell behind by six after the fourth inning and was unable to comeback. Brendan Green scored the lone run for the Saints in the bottom of the eighth.
Kyle Kuhr opened on the mound for the Saints, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing six runs while striking out three. He was relieved by Taylor Acquista in the fourth, allowing four runs and earning two strikeouts.
For the Cougars, Tom Brokop earned the win, allowing four hits in six innings of action. Zachary Pirc relieved him in the seventh, facing only four batters and not allowing any hits.
In the second game of the double-header, SHU opened the scoring in the first inning. Alex Robbins hit a single to center field, followed by a Green double that sent Robbins home. Emmanuel Gimenez hit a single to the short shop to send Green home to earn a 2-0 lead. Saint Xavier responded in the second with three runs to take the lead after a Martin homerun.
SHU took over again in the third, sending two runners home. Their lead didn't last long as another homerun for Saint Xavier against Acquista sent in two runners. SXU led 6-4 at the end of the third.
Robbins sent James Boice home in the top of the fourth inning, before the Cougars added another run to make it 7-5. Siena Heights added another in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars claimed game two.
Reid Olmstead was the starting Saints' pitcher, allowing five runs. Acquista again was the reliever, earning the loss with two runs allowed and five strikeouts.
Cougars' pitcher Jared Jones won on the mound with five runs against and a strikeout.
The Saints will return to action on Monday, facing Spring Arbor in a 1 p.m. at Webber International.
