Baseball Splits with #22 Madonna On Opening Day

ADRIAN, Mich. — The Siena Heights baseball team split 1-1 with Madonna on the opening-weekend of the 2016-17 SHU baseball season. The Saints defeated NAIA, 22nd-ranked Madonna 5-1 in game one of a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference double-header and fell 14-0 in game two, on Saturday.

Kyle Kuhr started the game on the mound, throwing five innings and giving up only three hits, while striking out two and walking three. Erich Klingelhofer earned the win for the Saints giving up just one hit, while striking out two in four innings of work.

Shortstop Freddy Jehle led the Saints offense with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Snyder Torres, Matthew Bondy, Ryley Overacker, Bradley Connochie and Brendan Green each had a hit for the Saints.

T. Jones took the loss for Madonna (1-1, 1-1), lasting 3.2 innings and giving up 5 hits to the Saints.

A combination of Saints pitchers could not shut down the Crusaders' offense as Madonna cruised to a 14-0 win over the Saints in game two.

Madonna plated 14 players on 13 hits with no errors in the game. The SHU offense was quiet with only 3 hits.

Johno Rodriguez earned the win for Madonna throwing six innings, only allowing three hits and striking out three. C. Landess came in to close the game and shut down all three batters faced.

Chris McKiddie suffered his first loss on the mound giving up five runs on four hits in only one inning of work. Offensively, Jake Jones, Deric Cain and Brenden Baker each had a hit.

The Saints move to 1-1, 1-1 WHAC and will have another chance at Madonna when they face off on Sunday, September 25 at noon at the Siena Heights Baseball Diamond.
