Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' Champions of Character provides training to ensure student-athletes know, do and value the right things in all areas of life.  The five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership are put into play, accounted for and tracked at all NAIA schools.

As an NAIA institution Siena Heights University has developed a Champions of Character campus program that includes:

• Ongoing character education for all student-athletes using the Champions of Character Live 5 orientation program.

• Professional development for coaches, athletics administrative staff including completion of the Character-Driven Coaching course.

• Emphasis on hospitality and game management of athletics events and conduct in competition

• Servant leadership activities that promote student leadership and athletic community engagement

• Ongoing oversight and assessment of progress in the program's implementation by both Siena Heights University and the NAIA.

Siena Heights University was once again recognized as an NAIA Champions of Character Five Star Award Winner.

This year 168 insitutions received the award as their activities touched over 187,000 students, parents and coaches with character based messages.

Every NAIA instituion's and conference's progress in pursuing character education is tracked and recognized annually for achievements in training, promotion and conduct in competition. The Champions of Character Scorecard measures commitment in five key areas and totals 100 points. Gold (90-100 points), Silver (75-89 points) and Bronze levels (60-74 points) are awarded.  2014 is the first year that the scorecard and ranking system has been employed.

This year the Saints scored 79 points and received a silver status.  The Saints have been a five star recipient since the induction of the Champions of Character program.
